Title: Autism and LGBTQAI+: Intersectionality and Treatment Implications
Speaker and Degree: Damon Bryan, LMFT
Description: Evan Done, Associate Director at the Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness (USARA) and appointed to Behavioral Health Commission by Gov. Cox
Description:Research has shown that LGBTQAI+ individuals are more likely to be diagnosed with Autism than heterosexual, cisgender individuals. In this in-service presentation, attendees will learn about intersectionalities between Autism and LGBTQAI+ populations. We will explore the concept of Autism as an identity vs. a mental health disorder, and will discuss neurodiversity-affirming practices and treatment philosophies. We will also examine possible explanations for the higher prevalence of Autism in the LGBTQAI+ population, and the resulting treatment.
Learning Objectives: Based on this presentation I…
1...will gain a greater understanding of the intersectionalities between the Autistic and LGBTQAI+ populations.
2...will learn treatment approaches and considerations that are in line with neurodiversity-affirming principles and best practices.
3...will learn about Autism as an identity vs. a mental health disorder, and explored implications for working with clients who are both Autistic and LGBTQAI+.
