Title: Healing the Hate Within: Confronting Internalized Homophobia with Psychodrama
Speaker and Degree: Joel Thayer, LMHC, MFA, JD, CP, PAT
Description: LGBTQIA+ identified persons, growing up in a heteronormative world, have recurring exposure to identity-based microaggressions and social stigma. These experiences can teach individuals to internalize negativity towards who they are. Joel will lead us in a training using psychodrama to address and work through internalized heterosexism and cis-normative biases, to safely address and transform old patterns and beliefs into ones of acceptance and healing. This workshop will be pertinent to persons of any sexual orientation, gender identification or cultural heritage. Joel Thayer is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Certified Psychodramatist, based in Franklin Massachusetts.
Learning Objectives: Based on this presentation I…
1...have learned how to use sociometry warm-ups to build safety and connection within an LGBTQ+ group setting.
2...can identify the impact internalized heterosexism and cis-normative biases have had both personally and collectively on the LGBTQ+ community and how it still continues today.
3..can collaborate on how to adjust common psychodrama techniques to create more safety and support for LGBTQ+ clients
