CWEERS Empowerment Practice
Presenters: Laura Skaggs Dunlin, MS, LAMFT; and, Kendall Wilcox
Our speakers created the CWEERS (Competency + Wisdom + Empathy + Empowerment + Resiliency Skills) program. CWEERS seeks to help local LGBTQ people handle social discrimination and internalized homophobia/transphobia by working with peers in a free group setting. The group empowerment method borrows heavily from fundamental nonviolent communication skills and practices. Meetings are held in Provo and Spanish Fork. Dunlin and Wilcox will share some of their experiences in working within and with the local LGBTQ communities as well as share some of their skills and strategies. Dunlin is a gay Latter-day Saint who also holds a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from San Diego State University where she specialized in LGB/SSA related issues and multicultural therapies. Wilcox grew up LDS and has produced hundreds of hours of Emmy Award-winning nonfiction television programming for the Discovery Channel, BYU Television, and PBS.
Please note our meeting location: Meetings are conducted at the new Pride Center in Salt Lake City; 1380 S. Main St, Salt Lake City, UT 84115 (near the Bee’s Stadium) ‐ unless otherwise specified in the schedule. Parking is permitted anywhere in the parking lot. Enter the building through the main entrance, and turn right to find the conference room.
