Description of Practice
For over two decades, JoAnn has been providing assessment and therapeutic services to youth, young adults and their families. As an advocate and member of the LGBTQIA+ community, JoAnn prides herself in remaining current in evidenced-based treatments for transgender and gender expansive youth and young adults. A founding board member of the first LGBTQ+ community center in Pocatello, Idaho, she has continued to advocate for safe spaces and inclusive support for the community. She is a full member of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH) and works and consults with Dr. Kuhn at One Haven.
JoAnn strives to provide a safe haven in which compassion-based, non-judgmental exploration of one’s authentic self can be explored. Working collaboratively, strengths and supports are identified and agreed upon interventions utilized. JoAnn is trained in TF-CBT and Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) and she is well versed in CBT, ACT, DBT, and Motivational Interviewing. Moreover, she is a member of the Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC).
JoAnn also specializes in assessment and treatment of clinically complex presentations in youth including cognitive breaks with reality, addressing trauma, learning to manage difficult life stressors, learning to use coping skills to deal with depression and feelings of hopelessness, increasing self-esteem and self-efficacy, addressing substance abuse and learning to thrive as a neurodivergent individual.
As the past clinical director of a community mental health center JoAnn supervised therapists and provided oversight of clinical programs. She also developed programs such as a Dual-Diagnosis IOP, a youth mental health outreach program in alternative high schools, and programs under the state welfare-to-work initiative.
In addition to providing therapeutic services at One Haven, JoAnn is also adjunct faculty at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Psychiatry. In this role she provides lectures on Motivational Interviewing and working with Disruptive, Impulse-Control, and Conduct Disorders in youth. JoAnn also provides therapeutic services for youth and their parents at HMHI Teenscope Day Treatment.
