In March 2013 the Guild hosted a “Building Bridges” workshop. This gathering assembled 96 people along the spectrum of approaches to dealing with sexual/gender orientation and religious conflicts. We took the first steps toward the goal of breaking the cycle of polarized debate within our community. Seeds for respectful dialogue among historical opponents were planted that day.

This year’s session will build upon the successful collaborations of mental-health providers who have traditionally been adversaries but who have continued to dialogue for the past 22 months. These workshop facilitators will present practice guidelines that they have agreed upon to increase therapeutic effectiveness and prevent clinical harm. In addition, workshop participants will be given a peacemaking protocol that can be used as a template for others who have been unable to resolve historical rifts. Participants will learn more about this protocol by witnessing a real-life dialogue between 4 key community members who can express the harm done by these rifts.

This interactive workshop will establish a “call to action” that will inspire participants to extend the principles of reconciliation.
